Is this animal abuse? Should I do something?
My boyfriend's dad bought a dog yesterday, a yorkie puppy. My boyfriend was very happy at first, because he's wanted a pet for a long time. But, this morning, he texted me saying he was upset because his dad had confined the puppy to a room that locks with a key before he left the house today. My boyfriend is still there, but for some reason, his dad thinks it's better to keep a new puppy locked in a room by itself than let his son, who has cared for dogs before, look after it. No, he does not have a history of hurting animals, he's the type of person who rescues spiders and takes them outside rather than kill them. There is nobody else there to keep an eye on the dog. My boyfriend has no key and says the puppy is crying, barking and scratching at the door trying to get out. Is this animal abuse? Should someone be alerted to what his dad is doing?

It is not abuse since the father isn't putting his hands on the dog to make it cry. So technically having a puppy locked in a room is fine. If theirs water, food, and air then it's totally okay. Nothing you can do only your boyfriend can handle the situation if it was abuse.

I agree with one of the other answers, people wouldn't lock a baby in a room by itself n let it cry..so why do it to a puppy? Most people wh do this end up getting mad once they get back because the door is now scratched up, the pups probably tore stuff up cuz hes bored, and he probably pee n poo'd on the floor..and his dad is probably gonna get mad n scold the puppy, which is ignorant cuz the upy doesn't kno any better. People shouldn't get animals if theyre gonna keep them locked up all day, but this isnt technically a crime unless the pup is kept in a filthy room with no food n water, so unfortunately theres nothing u can do.

Its a weird thing to do. No normal person thinks its ok to lock a baby in a room to cry itself to sleep. Dad is going to come home to poop all over the floor, a wrecked door and an upset puppy.

Not animal abuse. And if he doesn't trust his son with the dog then the son needs to earn his trust.

It's the Dad's house, his rules, his dog, your BF has no say in the matter, he must live with it or move out.
