Thank God you did not ask about a Steinway S - the cutsey Zsa Zsa Gabor "baby grand". Now - depends up on the year, the condition, what care it has received, etc. PAY a highly-qualified tech to look this over - and do some research ( ask the TECH, first!) what a fair offer would be. Same deal if you are SELLING - fair is fair. You can also read in the Larry Fine books about these - the first edition ( before he got threatened with all those lawsuits for *telling the truth*!) is a good place to start. Steinway is The Holy Grail to some pianists - so learn to separate fact from BS.

Added - repair of typos made before adequate caffeine was consumed.

Source(s): Owners of a very fine Steinway A3 squaretail - built in 1910, restored by our Steinway tech who has been with us - and most major NY classical venues - for over 30 years.

You'd have to have it evaluated by someone who really knows what they're doing. Even a Steiny can reach a point where it's not worth a restoration.

As far as an opinion, I'm not one to go crazy over a label. I've played some pianos that would put many Steinways to shame. Then again, I don't drool over Martin guitars, Gibson mandolins, or Bach trombones. I've played unimpressive examples of all those. I take every instrument on its own merits. Steinway definitely is a household name though, so I give them credit for that.
