My name is Rachel. I am 27 years old, and a musician. I play many instruments; my main instrument is the clarinet. I study composition at the postgraduate level.I enjoy music, reading, logic puzzles, cryptic crosswords and spending time alone.I'm diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. And finally, a couple of things that people will hopefully read so that I can stop facepalming every time I visit this site:The point of good instrumental technique is not to show off. It is there to get the best musical results in the most efficient way without damaging yourself. The rules of music- all the scales you may know, all the theory/counterpoint you study &c - are there to make music sound good. If you're thinking constantly about writing by the rules and never thinking about how your music sounds, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.The reason/s why you are so bad at your instrument1. You never practice.2. You practice badly.3. Your teacher is a moron, or you're learning from YouTube.

  • Help with vectors: how do I solve this?

See attached picture link. I'm doing an online physics course, and I'm not grasping the explanation given in the video lecture. I would appreciate if someone could tell me how to solve the problem rather than just giving me the solution.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Recommendations please:classical music composed in the last year?

As of late, I've been woefully lazy in my music listening. Now, while Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and so forth wrote beautiful music, as a composer I really do feel I should also be listening to more recently composed music.

Does anyone have any recommendations of music composed in the last 12 months, with links where I can listen to it? I'm willing to pay for recordings.

    Thanks in advance.

(Not particularly related, but for anyone reading this who is lamenting the "imminent death of classical music and the classical concert"- I went to a free concert today (four-hands piano), and the concert hall was completely full, and with people of all ages too.)

  • Suggestions please: Virtuosic clarinet pieces?

So I have a concert coming up, which will feature solos and small ensembles from my orchestra.

I was going to be playing the 3rd movement of Weber's Grand Duo Concertant, but I have been informed that the piano part is too difficult for the piano player.

I now need to find something else.

The other clarinetist is playing this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MQovTHw1so , so I need to make sure he doesn't outdo me.

I'm looking for something that is

    : Virtuosic

: With at least some degree of musicality; I don't just want a bunch of fast notes that are devoid of musical content.

: Out of copyright, so that I'll have a chance of finding it to download and print.

So far I have Messager's Solo de Concours as a possibility.

  • High volume retailer?

I tried Googling this, and got the answer "a high volume retailer is a retailer that has a high volume of customers going through it. That wasn't terribly helpful.

My question is, how many customers per day would a business have to service to be considered "high volume"?

  • Vanhal Clarinet Sonata No. 3 in Bb?

Does anyone know where on the internet I can get this? The second movement in particular.

Free would be wonderful, but if I have to pay, I can do so by Paypal or bank transfer. I DO NOT have a credit card, so any site that only offers that as a payment option would be no good to me.

    Thanks.

  • I think I am deciding that I am quitting clothing...?

No other animal creates and wears clothing except humans

I don't like clothing anymore... I don't want to wear any of it.

Clothing is boring, it's just a bunch of fibres with no infinite power...

I don't see where fashion is going these days...

    I don't care about clothing...

I got other things to do besides clothe myself... people should spend their times nakedly and truthfully, not clothed

Don't care about checking out peoples outfits anymore, the whole thing is pointless. Most people just go up there and think they are better than everyone else, but they don't know that I am sitting in one of the chairs falling asleep, and knowing that your ability to dress yourself will get you nowhere.

If I had to choose between learning about truth and spirituality, or clothing, I'd choose spirituality and truth.

Clothing is a crutch to life.

    Life is better without clothing.

I need to rest and sleep as much as I can from all this clothing.

  • More letters after my name :-)?

    Ignore the question mark.

This question is totally not for the purpose of showing off.

On Saturday I graduated with a Master of Music Studies.

I am now trying to work out pathways to get into research (preferably a PhD program). I think I still need to do some research methods courses to be eligible for the PhD program for most universities in my state. The course I just did involved some research but was mostly coursework-based.

Now, so that Y!A will think this is an actual question and not delete it...

Actually I can't think of one so I'll cheat: what question about classical music would you most like to be asked?

  • Does anyone use Noteflight?

I'm asking here because I have seen people mention Noteflight here.

In Noteflight, is there any way of changing or removing page numbers?

  • Looking for a musical term?

For the first movement of an orchestral work, I'm looking for a term that means "with restrained urgency". "Agitato", at least on its own, connotes too much agitation and no restraint.

Does anyone know of a suitable word/phrase?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Any early music scholars here?

I'm writing an essay on the difficulties of giving accurate performances of pre-Baroque music due to notational ambiguities. In the couple of hours that I've been searching, I have found A LOT of resources, but I was hoping that someone knowledgeable about the subject could recommend some books/articles.

    Thanks in advance/

  • Can anyone recommend any good resources on the history of digital technology in music recording?

Books, websites, online journals: anything. I am doing a lot of looking myself, but since this isn't my field of expertise, I thought I'd see what other people could recommend.

    Thanks in advance.

  • What is this music that I have found?; this 20 character thing is stupid?

This page printed out in the middle of another piece I printed. The other piece was in a different key and style.

I have become quite good at this page, but I'd really like the other pages of it so I can play them. I've done some searching around the IMSLP, but to no avail.

  • Once again, it's my birthday. Does anyone want to give me a grand piano *this* year?

I'll even pay shipping costs... eventually... I'll leave you the money in my will! I promise!

Oh, and a "real question" to appease the Y!A Gods:

Can anyone give me the letter notes for Beethoven's 9th symphony on the kazoo?

  • What do you think of my compositions?

    Modern classical music.

The first is a wind quintet written about halfway through this year.

The second is a piece for the string cohort of a symphony orchestra (finished last Friday!), with each part being independent. Played by my notation software, so some effects (col legno bowing, stopped horn) are not heard.

  • Why does this happen?

Why is it that sometimes when playing, we make mistakes with easy things but get more difficult things right?

I've been learned a piano accompaniment for a student's violin exam. One of the pieces has block chords in close position in the right hand, and octaves in the left hand. The octaves jump around a fair bit. Every time I've played it, I've made mistakes with the right hand part, but the octaves I sight-read perfectly, and got correct every time since.

Granted, octaves are a strength of my playing, but they are physically more difficult than close-position block chords, which I have been able to handle since my first few weeks of playing the piano.

    What causes things like this?
