High volume retailer?

I tried Googling this, and got the answer "a high volume retailer is a retailer that has a high volume of customers going through it. That wasn't terribly helpful.

My question is, how many customers per day would a business have to service to be considered "high volume"?

Everyone say it with me now: "It depends."

If you sell Corvettes, you might be able to pay the bills with a couple of sales a week. Some retailers wouldn't bother opening the doors for fewer than 1,000 customers a day. "High volume" depends on the industry, the average ticket price, the gross margin, etc.

Based on my experience with both shoestring launches and big-box successes, I'd bet that most businesses are happy if they have more than 100 paying customers a day coming in their doors. I know that's vague, but the question's very subjective.
