Of course they will.
Read the links that Eastside Guz provided. I live in Canada and we only get old news.. It seems they may ask for a Passport. Many people were abusing the system to avoid the 330 Peso FMM. In other words saying they are going overnight and stay for 6 months free and undocumented.
Now Mexico has access to international criminal databases and have been arresting and refusing entry to some. Welcome to the 21st century Mexico.
In my opinion Mexico will Not enforce the new rules right away. When things get overwhelming they will just waive people through without questions
