On a mac, how can I force eject a disc from my external disc drive if it hasn't been recognised?

I put a scratched disc into my MacBook's USB connected external disc drive and it won't acknowledge that anythings in it, and so theres no option to eject anything on my computer. I've tried everything that the internet has suggested but it's still in there, not cooperating.

I need the disc to come out because I have to use the drive for something else soon, any input would be helpful, thanks!

it has a small hole in the front of the tray you push a thin rod through that and you can push the gears that open the tray, I use a straightened paper clip.it is also possible to unplug it from the computer and switch off , when you switch on you can eject the disk if it has its own power source
