Should I read a song of ice and fire?

I do not like the t.v. show, I feel like the show itself is pretty boring. However, I like fantasy novels, I read the lord of the rings. Also I am not afraid to read a long book either, I read all 1439 pages of Stephen King's "The Stand".

I also know a bit of the main characters that get killed so I feel like that might ruin the suspense of the story for me if I read it. However, I know there are still two books to come and judging by how slow George R.R. Martin is writing the next book I feel like I could finish the entire series thus far and still have a year to wait until the next one.

Should I read the series?

If you don't like the show, then you won't like the books. The show follows the books really well (at least at first), so everything that happens in the show happens in the books. There are a few things that the book had that the show didn't, but it still has the same feel.

A Song of Ice and Fire is an odd fantasy series. It doesn't start off feeling much like a fantasy. It's very political and feels more real than a typical fantasy, more like a historical. Magic in the book is slow to appear, and all the cool things that it has in common with other fantasy novels may take a couple books in to discover.

If you didn't like the show then you probably won't like the books. I'd say it depends on why you didn't like the show. The books follow the same plotline as the show, especially in the early seasons. It's got largely the same cynical take on high fantasy as the show (although the show has more graphic and gratuitous sex). THe main difference with the books is that they go into more detail about the story and the background and stuff like that.

Because you don't like the show, it's not likely you would enjoy the books. The show closely follows the books, the books themselves are even step up like a show. If you're really interested, try reading a the first chapter of the first book. Who knows? You might like it. But ultimately, I say no, don't.
