If this were a real situation, what could have happened?

I had a nightmare last night that my mom saw a mother wolf and her babies walking across our yard, then shot the mom and killed all but one of the defenseless babies. I got pissed (I love wolves) and asked why she did it, and she said that she thought one of us would step outside and get killed by the mama wolf. I told her she could've called animal control and they would've tranquilized the wolf and transported her back to where she belonged, since wolves aren't native to where we live. She argued that animal control would've killed them, too. When I woke up, I talked to my parents about the dream and they both told me that animal control doesn't use tranquilizers on wolves and would've killed the wolf and her babies for the safety of nearby people. Is this true, or am I correct that if this situation were real, they would've brought the wolf back to where she belonged?

Chemical capture - or "tranquilizing" - is considered the means of last resort when dealing with animals, sorry. It is inherently dangerous and complex, trying to figure out dosages, dealing with an animal that is only partially tranquilized (or not at all) and is now possibly enraged and feeling threatened, etc. It also must be done by a TRAINED person, and most animal control personnel aren't. So unfortunately, your mom is likely correct this time. You could actually call your local animal control and ask, as well.

Read about the problems of using chemical control in this PDF file from the American Humane Society:

It depends on the city. In the vast majority of rural America they would kill the wolf for safety reasons. Some might consider it a dog and try to capture it. That probably wouldn't end too well. Few animal control would have access to darts. That normally requires a vet and they use controlled substances. It is normally wildlife biologists that use those. Personally I wouldn't trust a dog catcher with that. They could do too much mischief with something like that to play with. If I were a dog catcher I would quit before trying to collar a wolf. They are liable to take offense. It is something that a wildlife biologist would do if one were easily available. That isn't going to be true in most counties.
