Why do the so many people in the UK have such bad teeth.?

I swear half the population looks like Terry Thomas when they smile. I thought the healthcare there was supposed to be this great thing.

Update:

Dental care in the not free in the US either. If you have dental care insurance it only pays maybe half up to a maximum of $2000. My kids braces cost me $4500 each and that was after getting $1000 from my insurance. But I know most people here get a checkup at least once a year. Every answer I looked up about this says it costs to much to have decent teeth in the UK. If that is the case why don't you get more dentists?

Dental care actually costs money here, it's only medical treatment that's free. Not dental. So some people can't afford to go to the dentist and a lot of people don't care. I like to take good care of my teeth and I'm pretty sure other brits do too.

The NHS provides dental care which is necessary (fillings - amalgam ones, extractions etc), but not things which are cosmetic like whitening. You need to meet certain criteria to qualify for braces on the NHS ie. your teeth need to be pretty messed up, otherwise you have to pay. People in the UK in general appear to be less obsessed with tooth whitening than those in the USA, and seem to prefer a more natural look. Oh, and thanks for the massive over generalisation as well. I guess it's similar to how all Americans are fat....

The percentage of people with bad teeth in the UK versus the US is probably about the same. Both have dental care available, but not everyone can afford it, or may not use the dental care insurance/government funded dentist that are available.

Sure they do, mate. And you see flying pigs there too. Couldn't you use something more original?

BTW, dental is not free...it's only partially funded. The only people I've seen with teeth like you've described are the elderly generation who went through a WAR with food rationing.
