I don't think this horse is worth asking price but some friends of mine want him?

At my barn there is a 5y/o pinto with no papers. He is genuinely 5 though, he was born there so I know.

He had 30 days at 3 years old and nothing since. Standing in a stall for 2 years. UTD feet, teeth, etc. That's the only handling he gets is the farrier and shots.

His conformation is good except for a fugly head.

Owner asking $1,200. I believe he's worth $500.

My friends, who are horse newbies but have 2 ancient, solid, beginner horses, feel they're ready to step up to this project and feel $1200 is fair.

I'm not getting involved either way, I just showed them some other horses available at that price (finished, solid types) via craigslist etc and told them to take a look around before jumping in that's all.

But what would a unregistered, essentially unbroke, flashy big-headed pinto get in your area?

I have no idea...horse values are somewhat in the eye of the beholder.

We just picked up a well bred 5 year old QH mare who fits your general description. This mare is well bred... very well built and has been handled by a woman who was afraid to lower her voice...

We got her for free... I figure I may have her green broke by Thanksgiving.

To me personally it wouldn't be even worth the time of day let alone real money. All depends on what you are wanting though but for young girls moving up that horse most certainly is not going to be their best choice.

Encouraging them to search elsewhere is great and I would continue with that.

In situations like these you have to think of the animal to, and the best option is for a horse like that one is to be trained properly by someone knowledgable. So much damage can be done to a horse thats getting trained by someone who doesn't necessarily know how.

So yeah, personally I wouldn't pay for it because I wouldn't waste my time on an animal like that. My reasoning has nothing to do with the supposed appearance of the animal either.

A lot of people getting a horse get so caught up with the idea they can own a horse and will take what ever they come across out of sheer excitement. Usually the horse ends up being the one worse for wear and left completely unviable

He needs about $1000 of training--60 days minimum. That'll be training by a professional, not "training" by your buddies.

He's essentially "free to good home" and if your friends can buy him at $200 and then invest the remaining $1000 in the training, they just might get a good horse. The seller is hoping to get back the effort and expense that's gone into him so far, and of course he needs to find a real sucker to take the horse at the $1200 price.

Proper training by a professional is that horse's key to successful survival. Otherwise he'll go down the river, one way or another.

Oh, and they've got to be involved in the training so that they do not undo all the trainer's good work.

I don't think it's any of your business, and thank you for reminding me that I would never use you for an ajent. Don't you have anything better to do than worry about what someone else is selling their horse for? And you think you will get applause for showing a bunch of other nags? Dang, I'm glad you are not my barn buddy. Go mind your own business and make your own horse a rockstar.

yeah $250-$500Hope they have good medical insurance for the injuries trying to break and train a stall kept 5 year old.

I was going to say 500, but you already did, so, ill say 400. and its a bear after 5 yrs no formal training, I gave up on my doc sage doc!

I can tell how much you love animals by how you talk about them, not to mention how you protect your friends. Clearly they can't train that animal and will have a terrible time with it.
