How to respond tomorrow in English class?? [Super Important]?

So, right now in school (11th grade) in English class we are talking about America. My teacher wants all students to come up with 3 reasons why America is the greatest country in the world, and we have to read them out loud on Tuesday.

Well, I don t feel it is even close to the greatest country.. How should I respond? Should I speak my mind or say something that could potentially piss off my entire class...

Let me guess- your parents watch Fox, and their pessimism has affected you.

There are quite demonstrable areas where the U.S. has an advantage over the rest of the world. Why do you think so many immigrants want to come here?

It's still a very easy place for people to start new businesses. I heard a talk by a man who has several businesses in New York and recently opened one in Paris. He said it was 100 times harder in Paris because of the regulations.

The U.S. has a military force larger than the next 5-6 countries put together. You may or may not like that, but it certainly makes it unlikely hat anyone will attack us.

Middle class kids in the US always score as well or better than the kids in other countries on the tests that are given internationally. What you hear about the education system has more to do with our high poverty rate.

Look up any list of the top 100 universities in the world. US universities make up a good part of any such list. Our universities attract students from all over the world because they are so good.

Find a few things that you CAN agree with. It's not worth bucking your teacher on this- save your energy for when you can protest or work for something you really care about.

Tact, diplomacy, and casting a positive message are important skills. Otherwise, you'll just make people angry with no result.

If I had the assignment, I would recall a time when I thought the US was the greatest country in the world, and give the reasons why it was at the time. Things like when we were the leader in education and innovation, when our people largely moved together in one direction, rather than being factionalized as they are today. When we would make personal sacrifices to do the right things, including paying higher taxes or doing without. The kind of things that won WWII, put men on the Moon, made us the leaders in computer technology for years, leaders in health. I would conclude with the earnest desire that we return to that greatness.

How do you really know. Have you ever lived in another country? There's nothing wrong with a little pride in where you live. There's good and bad in every culture, but America is one of the wealthiest nations in the world. Food is plentiful...you should be more grateful. I have talked to someone from Algeria who said that it is sooo easy here in America. Everything just comes so much easier. And another person who tried to live in Germany, said it was much harder there. America is rich in resources...we have so much land to spread out in. We are not crowded in together like in other countries. Do not focus on the bad parts because it could be a lot worse and no place is perfect.

Be honest. If you don't think America is the greatest country, then come up with 3 reasons on why it's not.

If you are going to say that you don't think its the greatest country in the world, give reason to why you think that.

well, you're right. find another country with a richer history and less self-centred culture and compare America to that.

You could say this: it is great because you are free to leave it whenever you want. It is great because you are free to criticize its flaws freely. It is great because it is based on great IDEAS, even though imperfect, fallible people keep trying to mess it up.
