what is the best way to introduce a puppy and a cat (who has grown up with dogs)?

should i hold the puppy and let my cat come up to her or put the puppy down and let the puppy go to my cat?

my cat is 14 and has lived with dogs for i think all but the first year of his life on and off and has never really been fazed by anything but i cant remember the best way to do introductions.

Never just put a puppy down and let it decide what to do. Even a cat that is great with dogs won't want to be leaped all over and chewed like a toy. Puppy should be on leash so the cat can control how close he wants to come. Also make sure the cat always has an "escape route" if he decides he wants to leave. And keep in mind that a senior cat might not have the tolerance he did when he was younger.

So let the cat determine most of the interaction. If he runs away or hisses a lot, you'll need a slower start. Good info here: http://www.americanhumane.org/animals/adoption-pet...

Verrry carefully. Dogs are prey animals, cats are prey, need I say more?

Constant supervision, separate/contain when you can''t, immediate correction when caught in the act, there will be no guarantees, if it doesn't work out re-home the pup.

And if it's a terrier and/or a terrier mix, don't get it, as they're genetically inclined to kill small mammals, including cats, and it can't be trained out.

I say let the puppy loose to discover her new house, and the cat will meet her on its own terms. They will cross paths eventually, and there will be hissing. But it all works out in this type of situation.
