What would the most grammatically (or accepted) way to say this in German?
I want to express that I want something (specifically, a shirt) in German for my birthday, but being a beginner, I'm not sure if this is the most grammatically correct (or accepted) way to express this.
"Ich will das zu meinen Geburtstag kaufen."
I want to say, "I want to buy that for (myself) my birthday."
Forgive my German, for I am just a beginner. ^^;

You can say: "Ich möchte das Hemd für meinen Geburtstag kaufen." (e.g. to wear it on that day)

I think better would be "Ich möchte mir das Hemd zu meinem Geburtstag kaufen." ;)
"Ich will" ("I want") sounds a little hard here. "Ich möchte" ("I'd like to") is a little more elegant way to put it.
"Forgive my German, for I am just a beginner."
There's nothing to forgive, you're pretty good already ... just use "meinem" instead of "meinen" in your sentence and it's correct. ;)
