I'm having issues with fuel flow on my 1982 gs550. A few people have indicated it could be the petcock. How do i check its working?
The petcock has 2 tubes running from it, one thicker and a thinner. My assumption is that the thicker one is for the reserve tank and to prime, and the thinner one is the main fuel line?? However the thinner line seems to be pump operated so how do I know it works? The bike doesn't run so I can't do any tests while bike is running.

Drain the fuel, remove the lines in question and do a gentle blow test to make sure the lines are not clogged. If you stick a q-tip type of device inside the tube and it comes out with a slick goo, you may need to replace the tubes, AND rebuild the carbs... as this is degraded rubber that will gum up or clog the jets of the carb. The petcock can also be checked for clogs in a similar manner. Good luck.

The thinner one is likely the vacuum line. They won't flow any fuel unless there is vacuum draw on that line. Make sure there is plenty of gas in the tank, remove the thinner line and apply vacuum to it. If you get fuel flow from the larger line, its working. However, it may not be getting vacuum, so check all related components.
