How does a Wi Fi printer print from a computer?

Currently I have an old Canon printer hooked to the pc and the power source. It became obsolete apparently when I found the new ink cartridges would not fit, even though the ink number is 240 and 241. The color code of the new cartridge is different from the older one. Anyway, I am in the market for a new printer.

You usually need an internet connection and a router. The setup routine (which is different with each manufacturer) allows the printer to be seen through the network and to be printed to similar to a USB connected machine

Occasionally some printers allow a peer to peer connection without the need for a router, and most now allow printing from a tablet or smartphone

both the computer and printer communicate through your wifi network. You will need to have a computer that is wifi capable (typically a laptop, or a desktop with wireless adapter), internet access, a wifi router or wifi capable modem, and a wireless printer. When you setup your printer, you select your home wireless network and enter the wifi password. Your computer should already be connected to your wireless network. You then go to Devices and Printers on you computer and add your printer. When you print, the computer sends the data through the wireless router to the printer and the printer prints the document. One thing to note is it seems that some wireless printers don't have as good of wifi cards as computers and the printer should be located fairly close to the wifi router. My sister in law had a problem with her printer because she moved it to the kitchen and couldn't print documents. After a little bit of troubleshooting I found that the problem ended up being that the printer was too far from the router.

Within the OS of the computer, there's an option to add a printer. While stepping through that dialog, there should be an option to add a network printer. The next screen should scan for available printers where you can add the one that's on your LAN.

It uses the wifi network to communicate a print command from the computer to the printer & then prints. That's basically it.

A printer connects to your WIFI network, and is assigned an IP Address like all of the other devices, like smart tvs, blue ray players, tablets, smart phones, and computers. You would connect to is via this IP Address.

you connect it to the same wifi network as the other devices you want use to print then you select the printer on your computer as normal and when you click print it will do so wirelessly
