Your question assumes facts not proven. An individual's ability to apply algebraic principles to a given problem may "suck", but Algebra as a discipline doesn't.

Then it's not been explained properly to you by your teacher.
There's a book your library probably has, called Algebra For Dummies. It's VERY good at taking it all and putting it into something that makes sense.

Algebra may be tedious or difficult. It requires study. Like the rest of math you need to master the pre-requisites. You can not skip understanding a basic topic. If you do not understand primes or factors, you are hosed.
English majors are lucky. "I don't understand Chaucer but I can still study Milton."
