Can't play avi or mp4 when it's a youtube download?

It says I need a codec. I play avi all the time. Downloading from YT never works for me. What's wrong?

    How exactly did you download from youtube? Did you use an online converter?

    Note that avi is a very generic file extension, there are lots of different avi formats.

    Also, the solution is to install the missing codec, obviously...
