Espeon or Starmie?

I m putting together my first semi-competitive team to play in battles online.

It s not the best, but I really wanted to make it out of my favorite pokemon.

My top favorites are Mawile, Tangela, Deoxys D, Vaporeon, Gourgeist, and Leafeon, in that order.

I actually have the top five of those bred/caught with whatever egg moves and their best natures, and EV trained them last night.

Now my question is: who gets to be pokemon #6? I really do love Leafeon, but since I have the defensive Gourgeist and the offensive Tangela on my team, a third grass type would truly be a weak link.

My next three favorites after Leafeon are a tie between Espeon and Starmie. Which would be better?

I already have a water type and a psychic type. Espeon could be very offensive and have shadow ball and dazzling gleam, which is useful as I have a lot of defensive pokemon, but Stamie could learn thunderbolt and get rid of entry hazards.

So, long story short, on a team with Deoxys Defense, Vaporeon, Gourgeist, Tangela, and Mawile, should Starmie or Espeon be #6?

I'm going to look up Starmie right now. Cloyster is awesome by the way with skill link or whatever. That Pokemon is extremely offensive.

Starmie is frail, like Arcanine. I have an Arcanine with perfect IV's, maxed EV's attack + speed + reminder in HP, and moveset is Close Combat, Extreme speed, Wild Charge, and Flare Blitz.

Starmie is similar in which you get good coverage but you'll go down quickly. Espeon is the complete opposite of that and would provide more defence.

With Starmie, you could be creative.

    Do

    Scald (STAB)

    Rest

    Sleep Talk

    Rain Dance

Scald has a chance to burn and will ruin physical attackers + you would want 5 perfect IV's (except physical attack).

You would want Starmie to be equipped with an Assault Vest

You would want to divide up your EV's between HP, Def., and Spec Def (none of them would be maxed, but all equally high).

Then your key for this set is to set up rain dance and then rest up and sleep talk to try to get a scald. You could also get rid of rain dance for another attack...

I really think a defensive Starmie would reck havoc online as opposed to your traditional offensive Starmie with thunderbolt, scald, grass knot, etc.

You would want its hidden ability, Analytic.

Choose Espeon, you're team will be too defensive. Adding an Espeon can balance things out with a good special attack and a decent speed. Choosing defensive teams are good, but in the end, as we all know, moves like Endeavour can cause your Pokémon to end up as the same HP as theirs. And you don't want that! Starmie is not a Pokémon I prefer to use because of its Special Defense, and its speed doesn't match my expectations. Starmie's total base stats is 520, while Espeon's is 525. So go with Espeon.

    Good Moveset: Shadow Ball

    Psychic

    Dazzling Gleam

    Calm Mind/ Hidden Power

Starmie's been a strong Pokemon generation after generation, I think I'd go with it.
