  • Is it ok to let kitten chase laser?

I have heard it is potentially frustrating/harmful for cats to chase a laser pointer light. Is it ok for my kitten to play with one?

Backstory: we got the kitten last week. He was very sick and we nursed him back to health, but had him quarantined away from the other cat. Now he is better and full of energy. I tried other toys, but he REALLY goes for the laser pointer. So much that if we come into his room or stop playing, he looks all over the place and meows woefully because he wants to play with it. He can go for hours with this toy.

Could I be overstimulating him or frustrating him? I am afraid of overwhelming him since this is all new but he doesn't seem too bothered.

  • Kinda maybe have a crush on a coworker, but I am completely emotionally messed up and lonely due to the death of my boyfriend. What to do?

This is probably not an average question, so please bare with the details.

I'm 21, I was dating a guy I truly loved and wanted to marry for three long years. He was my biggest support through college and I don't realy know how to carry on happily without him. He died of cancer at the end of September - although we didn't know about it until the last second, despite being in the hospital for the symptoms. Who even gets gastric cancer at 29 anyways? So despite me somehow carrying on in life and making good grades still, I feel like my personality has greatly changed and that I find myself being riskier and more careless than I used to be. Basically, my common sense feels worn down by everything that has happened (along with my health and well being, among other things).

So now that the explanation is out of the way, this is the problem: I work in an office, as an engineer. When I started early in the summer, I had one of those lite crushes on someone (he's really cute and likes metal music like me). Of course I kept that to myself because I was more than happy with my boyfriend, plus this guy had a girlfriend at the time. The company had this big party at the end of the summer at a hotel, and we were allowed to bring one guest. I brought my mom because my boyfriend at the time wasn't really able to eat anything (we thought he had ulcers). This coworker was alone, newly single, and showed interest in me. He asked me why I didn't bring my boyfriend and I told him it was (cont)

  • Beginner at learning Japanese - when would you use certain kanji and when would you just use hiragana?

I have been attempting to learn Japanese, and I started by getting comfortable with hiragana and pretty comfy with katakana. I can write basic sentences and know a fair bit of vocab, so I started my kanji journey.

I started with this recommended book called Remembering the Kanji but I got ahead of myself and decided to make flash cards of all the words I knew already, and looked up the kanji for all of those just so I could get familiar. And boy am I overwhemeled!

So basically my question is: when do you want to use the kanji? I get that it can be a faster way to write/read long strings of hiragana. Like for university I can see it being easier to write 大学 instead of だいがく but for a super easy word in hiragana like afternoon as ごご why would you bother writing this madness: 午後 ?

I heard that writing too much kanji makes you look like you re trying to hard to sound smart and looks cluttered but too much hiragana is too hard to read.... I don t seem to be getting the idea of how people use these two together. Please shed some knowledge on this for me!

  • What happens to wood under pressure?

I know it sounds like an innuendo - just please, don t.

So, in a story I ve been writing one of the characters has superhuman strength. In one scene (a series of events too difficult to summarize in a yahoo answers question) they are so upset that they squeeze the sides on their wooden bed.

What would happen to wood being squeezed under superhuman pressure? Would the wood split, splinter, or just get impacted? Does the type and thickness of the wood matter? Would humidity be a factor (like it would be more likely to split/splinter in a drier atmospheric setting)?

It s a small detail but I like to get these things right when writing (and learning is cool).

  • Should I suck it up and apologize to my mom?

We haven't been speaking since Thanksgiving, all over a stupid petty fight. I came home at 2:30 am on Wednesday night (I am a senior in computer science, and won't settle for anything less than an A-, and that takes time). My mom like, jumps on me when I come through the door, hounding me about all this stuff I need to do tomorrow, complaining about how I never help out (because I'm at school working on stuff all the time).

I got annoyed because it's so late at night and to be bombarded with a huge list of stuff to do the minute you walk in the door after a super long day is inherently stressful.

I agreed to do the chores. I also mentioned that I wished school was open so I could get more work done, and she took personal offense to that.

It was a really stupid fight. I woke up the next day, did all the chores, but she still was mad at me for my "I wish I could go to school and get stuff done" comment, and another fight arose. I said "Fine, I don't need this stress, I'm going to my boyfriend's house for thanksgiving."

Meanwhile, I haven't talked to her (nor has she talked to me) for the rest of the semester. Now that the semester is over and I am home for more than sleeping, I have to see her. On top of that, I've kinda been phased out of celebrating Christmas with them.

I am stressed that parents aren't talking to me. I already don't feel at home in my own house.

Do I suck it up and apologize to restore peace, even though I didn't do anything really wrong?

  • Feeling guilty about very expensive purchase?

Today I dropped $1,000 on a Macbook Pro.

I am a senior in a computer science program due to graduate next fall, and I recently quit a retail job that paid me $7.99 an hour and got a new job for $13 an hour developing iOS applications part time that I will be starting in January.

On top of that, I will be taking an iOS development class AND be most likely working on an iOS app for a different class soon next semester. It was for these reasons I decided to drop the huge amount of money on this.

I got a 2014 Macbook Pro (8GB RAM, retina display) from the refurbished section of the apple website.

I feel...pretty guilty. I only made 3,000 dollars from my retail job for the entire last year because they did not give me many hours, so I really cut into my savings with this purchase. I bought it because doing iOS development on a Windows machine (what I already have) is really difficult. I have a virtual machine running Mac that I've been working on this semester, and not only is it slow, but it also crashes often. There are two Mac minis I could use on campus, but I thought it would be best to just make this investment.

Despite all that, I still feel really guilty for spending this. I've never spent so much in my life (last computer was a steal, an Asus gaming laptop I bought off a friend for $500). Can you make me feel better for dropping the big $1k on this? I'm already stressed out with finals so I am afraid I made a stupid impulse decision.

  • Espeon or Starmie?

I m putting together my first semi-competitive team to play in battles online.

It s not the best, but I really wanted to make it out of my favorite pokemon.

My top favorites are Mawile, Tangela, Deoxys D, Vaporeon, Gourgeist, and Leafeon, in that order.

I actually have the top five of those bred/caught with whatever egg moves and their best natures, and EV trained them last night.

Now my question is: who gets to be pokemon #6? I really do love Leafeon, but since I have the defensive Gourgeist and the offensive Tangela on my team, a third grass type would truly be a weak link.

My next three favorites after Leafeon are a tie between Espeon and Starmie. Which would be better?

I already have a water type and a psychic type. Espeon could be very offensive and have shadow ball and dazzling gleam, which is useful as I have a lot of defensive pokemon, but Stamie could learn thunderbolt and get rid of entry hazards.

So, long story short, on a team with Deoxys Defense, Vaporeon, Gourgeist, Tangela, and Mawile, should Starmie or Espeon be #6?

  • Kissed my boyfriend, next day he tells me he is sick with stomach flu? Will I get sick?

First of all, I am not talking about influenza. I am talking about stomach flu.

Last night I hung out with my boyfriend and kissed him a ton. I left around 12:30, today he texted me saying he was in the bathroom all night since 3:00 am (not vomiting, but...) and he doesn't feel well at all. I think he is sick with stomach flu, unless the chicken he cooked was bad (though his roomate ate it and I don't think he is sick).

Is there a chance I can get sick with the stomach flu since I kissed him a few hours before he showed symptoms? I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere, and since I have an awful phobia of throwing up, I am really nervous and want to know.

  • Looking to buy a tablet - should I got for a tablet that runs Windows or Android?

My price range is up to 130 dollars.

I like the HP Stream 7 (Windows, 99 dollars) and the Asus Memo Pad 7 (Android, 130 dollars). They both seem to have pros and cons.

What I want to use this tablet for:

    - holding PDF copies of my college textbooks

    - battery life that lasts all day

    - able to create and save documents

    - able to save files

    - to play games with

    - to browse the internet with

    - to attach to a keyboard for note taking

I like how easy to use the Android looks (though I have an iPhone and have never used Android before, nor do I really use my google account). I like the Windows one because I am familiar with windows and I know I can do productive stuff with it, but I hear that particular model has low battery life, and that Windows doesn't really have many apps.

    What should I go for?

  • My brother is throwing up, and I have a crippling fear of throwing up. Please help me, I'm can't stop shaking and I'm terrified!?

I just got back from a weekend at my friend's house. I have some cereal, but I am sure I washed my hands beforehand, I think. Since then I'm mostly sat in my room, except to do some laundry and might have touched the railing. While sitting in my room, I heard my (11 year old) brother moaning on the chair in his room, his dad telling him not to puke on the chair, and then horrible noises. I am so terrified. We don't know what caused it (bad soup? somehow he has the stomach bug?) but I am absolutely terrified and there is nothing that appeals to me more than getting in my car and sleeping in it to get away from my house.

He's in the bathroom now crying for help because he's in pain. I am so scared...

What if he's sick with a stomach bug? What if he's already touched several things? What if my dad didn't clean up properly? What if there are germs everywhere? What if i already have it? What if I have it on my hands? What if I get sick?!!? WHat is he sick with?! I need help!!! What do I do?

I wish it was morning. I want to escape. I have suffered from severe emetophobia for years.

  • What is this thing called? It's really cool but I can't find it anywhere online?

I have this old retro-ish pin that my mom gave me. It's hard to explain it, maybe that is why I can't find it online. but it's like looking into an illusion, like a kaleidescope. But kaliedescope pin and illusion pin didn't really come up with results. The pin just has a $3.00 worn sticker on the back and 'made in england'. This is a (silent) video of how it looks http://instagram.com/p/r6ZgjmwnQY/

    and a picture http://instagram.com/p/r6ZJ5AQnQK/

I love this ring. We had another in green and blue, and it looked like plaid which was lost long ago. do you know if this is a specific item or where I can find more to buy? Or what it is called?

  • Is updating to ios 7 worth it?

I still have ios 6 on my old iPhone 4s because I like it a lot. I haven't updated because I think that ios 7 is ugly. But lately I have been curious as to what ios 7's unique features are, and I want to know from people who actually have had both ios's.

So, what things are definitely better in the new ios? What things were better in ios 6? Do you think it's worth it to update enough to deal with the ugly layout? I appreaciate everyone's opinons!

  • Bad idea to buy laptop without authentic windows? Is RemoveWAT good? I need advice!?

My friend is selling a nice powerful asus laptop wihch I really like. The big problem with it is the fact he apparently wiped it clean at one point, and that included windows.

He installed this windows 7 that is on a miscellaneous plain written on disk and got me the drivers for the wireless. I asked him what happens after the three months goes by and he told me just a disclaimer appears in the bottom right corner. I looked it up, though, and it appears that you also have to deal with a black background and only the most important windows updates. I have borrowed the laptop for a few days and now I am trying to solve these issues.

I need to know my options. I already tried a keyfinder but it found a key that didn't work.

I just put on RemoveWAT even though I won't have to deal with the disclaimer for three months, but I am not 100% on how it works.

    - Does RemoveWAT just hide the disclaimer and activation notice? Do the other effects, like black background and no good updates still happen? Is RemoveWAT a good option? Are its effects permanent?

    - Is KMS activation a viable option, and is it better than RemoveWAT?

    - Is there some way I can uninstall this unlicensed WIndows and then restore the original Windows that was lost in the wipe, and use the activation code on the bottom of my laptop and not have to worry about all this?

    - Is this laptop worth buying at all? It is an excellent price for the power, but lack of original Windows makes me nervous

  • Simple java question: how do I convert this do-while loop to a while loop?

Here is my do while loop for a program I'm writing for an assignment (I already declared radius as an int, and a Scanner named 'input' was already set up):

    do {

    System.out.print("Enter the radius (use a number " +

    "between 10 and 250): ");

    radius = input.nextInt();

    if (radius < 10 || radius > 250)

    System.out.println("Not following directions.");

    } while (radius < 10 || radius > 250);

What it is supposed to do is print out "Enter the radius (use a number between 10 and 250): "

and the user will input a number. If they put in an appropriate number, the progrm moves onto another do-while statement asking for more input. If they put in a number not between 10 and 250, it's supposed to spit out "Not following directions." and then restarts the beginning instructions until the user puts in an appropriate number.

I can't seem to translate this into a while loop properly. I make it infinite, and I see my error, I just can't figure out how to remedy it. I'm obviously a beginner, so an example would be very useful.

  • Need a sixth pokemon for my team - easy ten points!?

I have just begun playing pokemon x. I have just beaten pokemon y with Goodra, Gardevoir, Greninja, Blaziken, Hawlucha, and Aurorus, so basically I am limited to making a team out of pokemon found in kalos that isn't one of those six.

Right now my new team that I bred from pokemon y is Pawniard, Litwick, Trapinch, Gourgeist, Mawile, and Inkay. Pawniard wasn't part of my plan but I accidentally bred one with perfect nature and amazing ability, but now I'm stuck with two ghosts, two dark, and two steel pokemon type-wise and no one to learn surf.

Originally, the team was supposed to be Blastoise, Flygon, Gourgeist, Mawile, Malamar, and either Glaceon or Slyveon.

So, now that I have given you this information, which pokemon should I replace Inkay with, basically, or: should I replace a different pokemon or should I keep my team the same and change it later possibly?

I don't have a surf pokemon if I keep it the same. I am keeping Mawile on the team for sure. It's ok with me to have a little bit of a type weakness because these pokemon have decent movesets and I do not battle competitively.

  • What am I going to do about this guy...I said yes to a date but.....?

There is this guy at my college who I met just recently. He's really nice, and I'd like to be friends with him, but only the second day after talking to him he asked me out on a date. I said "why not," and that was that (he did mention that my causality was amusing).

Unfortunately, since then he keep pressing me about this date and I've probably seemed a bit evasive since I've been ridiculously busy.

He's nice, we've talked a lot, and he's given me plenty of good help on this subject I'm having tons of trouble in.

I don't like him like that, and I only said yes to the date because I thought it'd be harmless and probably fun.

But since I agreed, he's kinda been suggesting things (nothing big...but it's not something you'd say to a friend). I seriously have avoided some weird situations so far, and I am nowhere near comfortable with having to continually do that. He really seems set on this date now.

A date doesn't mean anything...right? Because I think he has the wrong idea.

I was planning to go on the date with him originally, then I thought I would tell him on the date that I didn't think it was such a good idea and that I could pay for myself, but now I really am having second thoughts about this.

It's not just me....right? I've never gone on an official date before. Normally I am very evasive of anything romantic, any relationships. It's not me. I broke up with someone who was like this guy...because they just make me so nervous because they never let me go at my own pace. The fact I haven't known him all that long makes me even more nervous.

Like I said...a date doesn't mean anything, right? Do you think he has the wrong idea? Should I just put him down now and say I changed my mind? What should I do?

  • Difference between magnesium(II) nitrate and magnesium nitrate?

I am supposed to explain why saying magnesium(II) nitrate is incorrect when naming Mg(NO3)2, but even after reading the book an looking through all my notes, I still can't figure it out.

Could someone please shed some light on this for me? Those (II) things are really confusing. Perhaps you have something to share that would explain the positive charges in roman numerals (stock system, I believe it's called)?

I need to know by tomorrow morning. Thanks

  • Is it possible for there to be a compound with no molecules?

I am supposed to complete a worksheet for my college chemistry course that is due soon. I am completely stuck on this. Being terrible at chemistry, I have searched the internet for information on compounds and molecules, but my question remains unanswered.

I am supposed to identify some substances as:

    1) elements and molecules

    2) elements but not molecules

    3) compounds and molecules

    4) compounds but not molecules

I either answered 1 or 3 on everything, except 'He' which got a two.

Is it even possible for a compound to not be a molecule? I thought that anything with two or more atoms was a molecule, and two or more different elements were w compound, meaning that you'll always have two atoms because every element has at least on atom, correct?

Looking at the list of 4 things up there, what would you classify NHv4Cl, S8, KBr, and IF3 as?

Does it have something to do with the elements themselves?

Those are my questions - I will eagerly award 10 points if you can explain this to me.

  • Trying to make an all-water Pokemon team. Suggestions?

Water is definitely my favorite type, and I think it would be nice and challenging to try and work with an all water team.

But besides Vaporeon, I really don't know what others I would take.

The problem with pulling together a one-type team is that they all will have similar moves (kind of like Misty, who seems to only have taught her staryu and starmie 'water pulse' x_x).

Some notes: It will be either a 4th gen or a 5th gen team. I know that there are many pokemon who gain additional abilities, there are new moves, and of course the new pokemon in 5th gen, but if you suggest 5th gen stuff, try to put an asterisk next to it (eg. Politoed - ability: drizzle*)

Also don't use Ludicolo, I really don't like him especially after having to suffer him on the tv show when Brock had one.

I like vaporeon, poliwrath, octillery, squirtle, feraligatr, kingler, starmie, marshtomp, milotic, crawdaunt, milotic, clamperl, kabutops, carracosta, omastar, manaphy, milotic, dewgong, sharpedo, sealeo, and a bunch of others.

Hell, if the pokemon looks like a water type I'll take it. Or if it's like Rampardos who can learn surf and aqua tail, ok, maybe.

I eagerly await your suggestions and movesets - help is really appreciated.
