A diesel engine works by the fact that the diesel/air mix explodes when compressed. That won't happen using propane Gas so do it and just stand there and stand there as the engine won't work.

VW Diesels are going to ALL be recalled very soon. I wuldn't do any mods to one even if it were possible, which propane isn't.

Not really practical as the compression ratio is far too high. Propane/CNG/LPG conversions are possible but realistically only on gasoline engines.
