Social security checks after a death?

My friend's mother passed away on the 15th of Sept . Usually they get her SScheck around the 5th. Will they receive one more for Oct or is it automatically cut off? It's not a lot, but would help with her final expenses and other things. Please no unkind remarks, they just want to know.

Update:

Geez guys, I should have said the funeral home had reported it. My question was if they would get the sept check. They know not reporting is fraud. If they had NOT reported it of course they would get another check, illegally. Hence the question.

Update 2:

Sorry I meant Oct check, since technically that would be sept check

It should cut off as of the date of death. They do need to report it. There is a $250 death benefit they can get.

well i found this answer on AARP website

    | Social Security benefits are paid in the month after they are due. So, if a person dies in the middle of June, the check that arrives that month is actually for the month of May. Thus, the deceased is not being overpaid and the estate does not have to give back anything.

However, Social Security does not issue partial-month payments. Because the person did not live for the entire month of June, no benefit at all is due for that month. If the family does not notify Social Security in a timely manner of the death, the full June benefit may be paid in July and the money would have to be returned.

In order to be due a social security benefit a person must be alive the entire month. The benefit received in October is payment for September. Since your mother wasn't alive the entire month of September the benefit payment received in October must be returned.

In regards to the payment of a $255 one-time death benefit. If a person who dies has been receiving benefits off of their own account (as opposed to receiving benefits as a spouse) or the deceased was insured the $255 one-time only death benefit is ONLY payable to a surviving spouse or to any children (if there is no spouse) who are entitled to monthly benefits on the account of the deceased in the month of death. Otherwise it isn't payable to anyone.

NOTICE OF DEATH: Funeral homes send social security a notice of death on form SSA-721 and the death is input upon receipt of the form. If a benefits happens to be paid after a person has died a relative can call 1-800-772-1213 to report the death. Usually the banks return benefit payments received after someone has died.

NO, on BOTH counts. YOU are required to INFORM the Social Security Administration of the death, and return any payments made after the date of death.

She has to notify social security of her mother's death, she sends a copy of the death certifcate, any overpayment would have to be paid back, and may lead to charges of fraud, they will find out when she died.

No, you will not receive another. As a matter of fact, you may have to return the one she received on the 5th of September. That happened when my dad died.
