He is secular and educated. He supports Christians and others. This article doesnt mention religion but Assad was head of the Syrian Computer Society, interesting fact.

Not an easy question to answer, but it should be remembered that as brutal as Assad's regime has been, it hung together as a secular state, and as long as he was not challenged "live and let live" seemed to apply before the war started. Christians were guaranteed rights under the 1973 constitution and these stood up to and including the outbreak of the civil war in 2011.
This appeared to have changed somewhat since 2011 though. Assad's supporters would claim (I am not sure how true this is) that the only Christians being attacked by his regime are those who signed up with the Free Syrian Army. Many Christians have also been allowed to leave Syria without objection from the regime.
But there seems to be a lot of duplicity involved in the whole situation now (that said, Syria is a complete mudbath when any sort of logic is applied - the divisions are numerous, and this week's friend can be next week's eneny), so it is not clearly cut and dried as to what the situation on the ground now is. The major war definition is though between the principally Shia regime and mainly Sunni rebels, and everyone else is caught in the middle.

The Christians support (and voted) for him as he is a secularist.
Assad (like most ruling Arabs) is not driven by religious fervour, but by economics. Before this civil war he was making big inroads into fixing up his country.
