Yes, something serious is wrong with your steering. Many things can cause this so take it to a mechanic or two for an inspection and estimated repair costs. Do this ASAP.

Start with the tires. If you have mud/snow or all terrain tires, there may be a developing lump which causes the steering wheel shake. Then check if the rims are balanced to the tire. Little weights take care of that. If none of those apply, have a reputable company check the steering system; ball joints, struts, shocks, springs, etc. Don t want a breakage above 20 mph.

The tires would be the first thing to have balanced. That will show up any defects in the tires and eliminate that possibility. The other thing Jeeps are known for is a bad steering stabilizer. It is a shock that is mounted on the tie rod and attached to the front rear. Check to see if you have one and if you don't check online or a parts store for one and install it.

Step 1 is to have the tires inspected, which would include checking the bearings. You need to see your mechanic, perhaps get the front end aligned, hard to say without seeing it.
