The legal definition of murder is "the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought".
Killing an animal is not murder because it is not a human being.
Killing an enemy soldier is not murder because it is lawful when done according to the laws and customs of war and is usually done without specific malice towards the victim.
Killing a person who is trying to kill you is not murder if you are taking only that action necessary to prevent grievous bodily injury to yourself or a loved one. If it is not malicious, it will be found justifiable and not murder.
Killing people for revenge or sport is murder.

Killing is not always murder. See Exodus 20 and compare it with Exodus 21. Though it is always about the loss of a life, it is not necessarily murder.

Murder is killing another human being. At one time killing a slave was not murder and allowed by law and religion.

"MURDER" is defined as an act in which MALICE TOWARDS THE VICTIM is implied. We MURDER because we HATE.
"KILLING" is defined as the SAME act, but without the malice towards the victim. This would be like a savage killing a deer, and then giving thanks to the universe for providing food, or in a more extreme case, a professional executioner killing a murderer he has never met, and does not hate.
"Murdre" and "Killing" are NOT the same thing.

Not all killing is murder.
Official legislative definition of murder is generally considered as:
"the UNLAWFUL, PREMEDITATED killing of one HUMAN being by another."
