Suggestions on a cheap reliable used 4WD vehicle?
I'm moving to a mountainous area where it snows, unlike most of California. I'm thinking about a second vehicle for snowy days and hauling rather than replace my newish Fiesta. I want to spend the minimal amount possible while having something that won't break down too much.
PS. I only drive automatic

Web search "top 10 longest cars on the road" and you will find Subaru in the list, possibly in more than one spot. I put a lot of miles on 1980 and 1983 Subaru 4WD wagons. But then I had a 1986 Ford 4WD pickup and then 2001 Pathfinder SUV for winter.
But when the Pathfinder was starting to rust out and suddenly needed thousands of dollars of work for brakes, brake lines, 3 of its 4 springs were broken, etc. I bought a 2008 Subaru Outback (all wheel drive wagon) with 150,000 miles that still looks like new. But it may be difficult to find a good deal on a used one because they last and are fun. Instead of being apprehensive about a forecast of heavy snow, you would rejoice. Time to have some fun in the snow.

Even up in the mountains, the state and county have snow plows and mostly keep the roads clear enough that you don't REALLY need 4-wheel drive. Your front-wheel drive Fiesta should manage nicely in all but the worst weather, and when the weather DOES get nasty they'll probably close the roads anyway. Buy a set of tire chains to fit your Fiesta and learn how to use them, and you'll go anywhere a 4x4 can go.
