how to fix a toilet that runs several times a day?
It doesn't run constantly. Maybe a half dozen times a day all of a sudden it will run for about 30 seconds, then stop. I have noticed that my water bill has gone up, so it's obviously using water. How do I fix it? I really don't have the money to pay a plumber. I've called several, but since I live about 20 minutes from the nearest 'city', they all want at least $100 just to come look at it! Some quoted me another $150-$200 to fix it depending on what's wrong! Can someone help me? Thank you!

shut off the water supply === get the tank clean == then install new parts in the tank [[ check to see that all is working properly and the water supply is adequate...=========

Repair or replace the old internal mechanisms. the flapper or the float is hanging up.
