I think fighting in hockey is meaningless. If you don't get score why would you fight?

Update:

referee can decide if a check has penalty or not as same as other games. for those who say that what if a player checks your teammate really hard

You could take it further and say Hockey is meaningless, which would be very correct

what if somebody checks your teammate really hard into the boards or crashes into your goal tender? Hockey fighting is about holding people responsible for their actions (more so than sending them to the penalty box) and can also be used to grab momentum in a game.

To protect someone on your team, if they do a lot of cheap shots or if they trash talk.
