Public ownership of goods is not socialism. It's just an aspect of government. Any kind of government is going to have some sort of public space of operation. Otherwise it wouldn't exist.
Socialism is the ownership of the means of production by the working class. It's really that simple.

The American Constitution clearly states what the Federal Government can support . I've noticed Liberals can't tell the difference between "General Welfare" and "Individual Welfare". We have a military to finance and we need to support generally helpful issues like fire fighting and infrastructure which aid the Nation in a general manner.
Those are Not Socialism.
The States can support socialist expenditures. The Constitution allows for that. Let California (for example)care for California's Socialist activities if they wish but not force other States to pick up the expenses and debts they create for themselves.

The definition is one thing. Money and power are another. It always sounds nice in the beginning before all the problems arise when government and the connected start gaining massive wealth, but those who also get money from others hard work will never care as long as they get a piece. It's human nature. Go ahead now and attack me based on the definition. I majored in Political Science and know it. It's interesting that they always point to very small populations as proof that it works.
Those who will have to pony up will never be happy.

According to KARL MARX (Cfr. "Communist Manifesto"), Socialism is a form of dictatorship in which the state assume ownership of the means of production, bans private property and social classes.
This is done to re-educate the people to a new classless society, everyone works for the STATE and the STATE gives everyone what it thinks is the right share.
