I tried resetting Safari and emptying the cache but that didn't work so I went into Safari extensions and clicked on default startup and hooray! Safari now opens. Luckily I back up all my bookmarks so I didn't lose any history.

Reset Safari and it will work fine. Click the "Safari" menu and choose "Reset Safari". Select all items.

Opera (or Chrome or Firefox) is not faster than the latest Safari.
