    It could all be an illusion.

    By definition, the universe includes the totality of all that exist. And since energy and matter cannot be created or destroyed, only made to change form, existence is eternal, therefore there is nothing to persist or strive for, because existence is impersonally guaranteed by the Laws of Nature.
