bi/gay guy question about starting to kiss someone you're interested in?

Let's say you're bi and your friend is bi (I suppose it could just as well be gay), and you've started to find each other interesting enough that things are slowly progressing to where you are ready to kiss for the first time.

I know it's kind of got to be ok with both people, but would you use tongue the first time, or not until the 5th time, or only after 2 months, or what? What are your thoughts? I don't want to rush the guy if the norm is to lay back for a while.

Update:

p.s., this would be both my first guy kiss, as well as his.

I would not try that on the first kiss, keep it simple and mild, otherwise you could turn him off. See where he takes it and whether he wants to go further, I'm sure he will send you signals on whether he likes where its going or not.
