As good as De Gea is, I think pipping Schmeichel back then is out of reach. Maybe De Gea is the better natural shot stopper, but Schmeichel wasn't only a fantastic keeper but his presence and command really played a bigger deal.
None of the current defence would make it in either.
Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Carrick - these three provide real quality in central midfield that United have lacked for years. However none of the really compare to a midfield combo of Scholes and Keane.
On the wings, Beckham and Giggs would beat defenders, deliver pin point assists and knew how to find the back of the net. I don't think we have a number 7, let alone a winger that know how to do that at the moment.
And up front... Well. Yeah lets keep Cole and Yorke.
So I don't think any current United player would be able to crack Fergies starting XI from 98-03.

1988 side... Bryan Robson.
One of the Best English Midfielders in World Football and better than what we have today imo.
Problem for Fergie and United in that era was, we were unstoppable in 1987-88 , despite United having had a good team and finishing 9 poinst behind us - they never really looked like seriously being champions that season, nobody did for that matter. That Pool team was in its own league lol

NO F'CKING WAY IS DE GEA BEATING OUT BARTHEZ OR SCHMEICHEL FOR THE GOALKEEPER SPOT!
Realistically, the only player is Schneiderlin to substitute for Keane and Rooney is a major upgrade from Dwight Yorke

Only THICK-skulled morons - wooney, fellaini, young and smalling.
Intelligent players wouldn't work under Slax Fungicide - the boot-kicking bone-headed bully
and his equally THICK capitano - Roy Keane.
Or had Keano been discarded by then ?
