Multiple GPU's share the load to increase the frame rate.

In general - people want upwards of 60 frames per second with 1080 video.

But the game makers have video settings. You can turn on higher levels of details, faster far rendering, etc. When you turn ON these features - your frame rates drop.

There are also 4K monitors available and GPU's now support 4K or UHD video. This needs better video support.

Since this is a hobby and people spend a lot of time with their gaming PC - they are happy to put bigger processing under the hood.

To Newbies - this is scary because you want to copy someone else s build - right? Just keep in mind that you can make a good gaming PC for about $1200. Just use PCPartPicker and leave the ego/GPU Envy at home and you will be find.

Same reason why people that live in the city would buy a $400,000 supercar.
