Is 100 dollars enough to put a hold on a rental place?

Update:

I found this house for rent and the rent is for 500, I contacted the owner and he said, that all he really wants is for someone to occupy the house, pay rent, and keep it maintained. I haven't agreed to pay him anything until I see the house, and it looks nice, its a two bedroom house, so its small.I did agree to place 100 towards the security deposit. He also agreed to let me live there for a period of five years. If I like the house, did I go about it the right way?

Update 2:

No he lives in another state, and he is from my state. I have seen a lot of pictures of the house both inside and out. But I still want to go there and get a feeling, and make sure that there isn't anything funny like other people living there that he isn't telling me about. The security deposit is 600, and he is sending me keys to go look at it either way. I put 100 dollars to place a hold on the property so that I don't lose the opportunity to someone else.

Update 3:

He will refund me the 100 if I decide that I don't want the house. but if I do like it then its 100 dollars toward it.

    Depends on the landlord.

As a real landlord it costs us REAL money to advertise a property for rental.

If you expect us to take it off while you "make up your mind" we have a loss of rent for that time period.

Hence no one is going to take a 500 a month rental off the market for you for a $100 deposit. its just not viable.

If 12 people did that in a year, a landlord would lose $4800 a year in rent.

Hence $100 will get you nothing. (I think its most likely a scam, cant see a real landlord doing it, at least not one who has any type of brain)

    This sounds like a scam.

Did he say he lives out of the country? And is he asking for the money before you can see the house? Have you met the landlord at the property?

Holding deposit is often a scam. If you have no signed lease, they will often switch you to a different apartment. Why cant you sign a lease with a move-in date and specific apartment number written on the lease? Then you can give a security deposit.

Sounds like a common craigslist scam.

Usually not, but depends on the place, and how long a hold
