Go back and read about Lyndon Johnson presidency, but mainly 50 or more years ago the Democrat party beliefs were not liberal,they as a whole were conservative and racially indifferent about blacks especially. And when the president (Johnson) openly accepted and initiated favorable civil rights changes in favor of blacks, the more radical racist individuals within the party abruptly decided to become Republicans.
