Why don't people capitalize God's name?

God should always be capitaised when used as a name, but not when writing about, for example, Norse gods. The word 'he' should also be 'He' as is 'His' and also when used to describe Jesus. It is probably ignorance of this when peope fail to use capitals.

"It depends on the usage. God if one is referring to the Judeo-Christian diety, or god, when one is used as a common noun, e.g. Biblical god, etc. So I would use it in both ways. However, as the word God can nowadays be used to refer to gods of other religion coupled with the fact that the non-religious do not attach any significance/uniqueness to the JC god, the end result is non-capitalization. It's not just because one doesn't feel that God exists.

However, I don't find many atheists I know not capitalizing the word. God is only capitalized when referring to the monotheistic deity. When referring to any god it is not capitalized.

The so-called Hindu gods are all regarded as manifestations of the one God.

In addition, standards of written expression are often low, so that simple ignorance of the conventions is probably the most common cause of mistakes.

Indeed it should be "God" in "Benny says his prayers to God".. But general references to gods, as in various religions, do not need capitals.
