If someone did a drawing/painting of some famous logo/person/company and sold it privately to a friend, would that be considered illegal?

Say I had a favorite athlete and wanted a painting of them in their uniform. Someone painted it for me and I bought it. Would that fall under copyright issues?

Copyright gives the owner the exclusive right to copy. Creating a new work from original materials is not a "copy" or a "derivative work" and thus not a copyright infringement, to the extent it contains creative works of original authorship.

The trademark/logo is a different issue, more related to commercial use of the brand in ways that may create a "likelihood of confusion", such as counterfeit goods. Some companies are very protective of their logos and could take legal actions against misuse.

Provided that the piece of art was completely original and did not contain anything in it that was copyright, you're fine. The copyright portion would only count if it were for mass distribution. Since the work is original, there is no copyright infringement and you can't really claim a person as such, so you're good. Enjoy your painting.
