Prior lease agreement?

I recently moves and signed a new lease with a new landlord. I still have the lease agreement and all related papers from my last apartment. The final move out checks were done and my security deposit was refunded. Do I need to keep any of these paperwork now that the lease is no longer in force and I no longer there?

You have nothing to worry about regarding the potential of being sued. You signed off on check-out report, your landlord did and you have received your security deposit. Whether your landlord has 2 years to sue or 20 means squat. There is zero chance you will be sued.

However, as a precaution keep your paper work for a year or two as these are legal documents. And you never know, you may want to refer to them for one reason or another when looking for another place.

While landlords are required to keep documents on record for a specific length of time you would be amazed that when there is change of owner/management how paper work gets lost. As a precaution you will want to keep your records. For how long? A couple of years would be fine. Do you have to? No.
