Manning has the 3rd highest cap hit this year behind his brother and Stafford. He didn't take a paycut. First of all the Broncos and Patriots didn't throw as much money as people think. Most NFL contracts are back loaded with non-guaranteed money that will never be earned. Ware is the only one with big cap hit this year, both Talib and Revis have cap hits at 7 million. The rest don't have big cap hits. Aside from Manning and Clady, the Broncos didn't have a lot money tied up with players entering FA and as others mentioned, the Broncos had let people leave/cut players as well. Patriots always manage their cap frugally, though as I said, only Revis got decent money from them.

That's two team captains, the two defensive leaders, the best O-Lineman the Broncos have, and their best run stopper. I'd also include Ryan Clady since he would be the starter but he injured himself I think during training camp. I think it's also worth noting that Emmanuel Sanders and Brandon Marshall are probably still injured some and Evan Mathis certainly played injured.
