hyenas, or possibly the smoke depending if the hyenas escaped and dragged his body from the flames or not. people in a fire don't die from burns, they die from lack of oxygen due to smoke inhalation long before that. I think the hyenas did kill him to be honest. they had a pack and were already attacking him when we saw the flames, and we never saw the flames, actually engulf the hyenas or scar. they could have killed him then escaped, will never know.
