Why would a loving God send unbelievers to Hell to burn for eternity instead of sending them somewhere less unpleasant?

It's a bit like buying a puppy from a pet store and then torturing and killing the ones you don't want instead of just leaving the unwanted puppies at the pet store and then claiming to be an animal lover.

(John 5:28, 29) Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.

What would you think the memorial tombs are, the grave. So when we die we are all in the grave, we know nothing cause we are dead. Both the righteous and the unrighteous will be resurrected. According to the Bible, those that have a resurrection of judgement will have everlasting nothingness, no place called hell, that is man made. If I am to have everlasting nothingness, I'd rather have that then burning for all time. That is not from a loving God. jw.org

In whatever way a reasonable person may look at the matter, he cannot accept the existence of a hell of torment. Logic rebels against it. Human nature is repelled by it. More important, God’s Word does not say that such a place exists. When a person dies, “he goes back to his ground; in that day his thoughts do perish.”—Psalm 146:4.

Most of the world’s religions teach that something inside a person continues living after death. Some hold that the dead can harm the living or that God punishes the wicked by condemning them to eternal torment in a fiery hell.

    WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES:

At death, humans cease to exist. “The dead know nothing at all,” states Ecclesiastes 9:5. Since the dead cannot know, feel, or experience anything, they cannot harm—or help—the living.—Psalm 146:3, 4.

Although the Bible does not specifically say so, it does seem to indicate that there are different levels of punishment in hell. In Revelation 20:11–15, the people are judged “according to what they had done as recorded in the books” (Revelation 20:12). All the people at this judgment, though, are thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:13–15). So, perhaps, the purpose of the judgment is to determine how severe the punishment in hell will be. Whatever the case, being thrown into a slightly less hot portion of the lake of fire is not much consolation to those who are still doomed for eternity.

Because God is omnibenevolent and infinitely greater than any creature. Thus offending Him even a little is worthy of an infinite punishment for all eternity. God shows mercy to those in hell by giving them a very harsh, yet less than infinite, punishment for all eternity.

I don't know. But I do know unwanted pups don't have any choice in the matter so your analogy fails. Where else would he send us? Heaven? Isn't that the other option in that religion? If God was real and created us all and accepted extreme torture to get us into heaven then loving or not he'd probably be pretty pissed with people who don't believe in him after all that. Of course we know better then to worry about getting our just deserts in that story. The point is that he doesn't exist. Why concern yourself with the hypothetical?

A sentence of eternal damnation should give you a clue just how truly egregious our sins are to God. What I've always wondered is how God can grant eternal joy to me just because I believe in the person and works of Jesus of Nazareth. I didn't have to do anything to prove myself worthy. Wow! Now that's love! And the best part is that we get to choose. Whether we want to spend eternity with God or apart from Him, He will give us exactly what we want.

The dogma of eternal torment is based on the immortal-soul theory. However, the Bible clearly states: “The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.” (Ezekiel 18:4, 20; see also Acts 3:23.) Proclaimers of hellfire have made the true God, Jehovah, appear to be a fiend—a cruel monster—instead of what he is: a God of love, “merciful and gracious . . . and abundant in loving-kindness.”—Exodus 34:6.

Lovingly, God has made provision to save men, not from torment, but from being destroyed. Said Jesus: “God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son, in order that everyone exercising faith in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life.”—John 3:16.

  • Exactly because you cannot kill/burn a "puppy" forever, but God has the power to burn eternally the spirits of Men ,Women and Angels which he created and exists forever according to Bible-God's Word and termed as second death in Revelation 21:8.

It's the lake of fire and sulfur that burns eternally that God will send all cowards, unbelievers, liars idolaters, sexually immoral, murderers and occult magicians according to Revelation 21:8-Revelation 21:8 (ESV) - But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

So we must analyze our own lives if we fall into any of these category and repent and trust in the precious sinless blood of Lord Jesus Christ which was shed on the Cross at Calvary, Jerusalem some 2000 years ago ,which washes away all our sins forever if we trust in Lord Jesus Christ and sin no more.By the guidance and power of Holy Spirit we can lead a life pleasing to God.

It's when it comes to the eternal hell fire/lake of fire and sulfur which Lord Jesus Christ warned us in Gospels and Revelation 21:8 ,that the true nature of somebody who claims to be "Christian" is brought out.

Holy Spirit helps us to love one another in the self-less love shown by Lord Jesus Christ on the cross by giving his life for the sins of all mankind ,so that whoever trusts in Lord Jesus Christ can have eternal life.

Matthew 7:12 (ESV) So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

1 John 4:20 (ESV) If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

1 John 3:15 (ESV) Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

Agreed. The idea of a god that is defined as the embodiment of love cannot be either logically or morally reconciled with a god that would inflict infinite punishment for finite offenses
