Why is the internet chock-full of spelling and grammar errors that most of us overcame during elementary school?

This has even found its way into more reputable sites. It's like we've all just given up.

Often it is because they rely on spellcheck which is why you so often see the mis-spelling of the words like break/brake, where/wear/ware/were/, weather/whether and bear/bare. Unfortunately spellcheck has no concept of context. Also I am sure that schools nowadays do not teach spelling and grammar in the same way as they used to. When I send either a text or e-mail I always use capital letters when required and both correct spelling and grammar. I refuse to use to use so-called "text speak"

Because before the internet, where did you see people writing? In textbooks and magazines with editors and proofers. There is more bad speeling and graymer because there are more people writing more words, and the majority of those people are not professional writers, or thinkers for that matter. People are not actually becoming stupider, it's just that we see more stupidity from more of the stupid ones than we ever did before.

Most people typing on the internet are not accomplished typists and also they get in a hurry and don't proofread anything before posting.

i`m guessing its because very few people proof read their work anymore - the likes of twitter etc just encourage you to make small cutting remarks without any checks or need to substantiate them
