Can someone help me with this geometry problem? I am getting confused.?
A triangle has two sides that measure 14 cm and 17 cm, respectively. Which of the following could be the length of the triangle's third side? Choose all that apply.
a) 3 cm
b) 16 cm
c) 25 cm
d) 28 cm
e) 31 cm
I know I have to add the two sides and I get 31, but I am not sure if the third angle can be less than or more than 31. I am confused. Any help?

All but a) and e).
a) is equal to the difference of the given sides. It would demand the 3cm stuck on the end of the 14cm side. You would have two overlapping straight lines rather than a triangle.
e) is equal to the sum of the given sides. You'd have to stick the 14 and 17cm sides end to end. Again, you'd have two overlapping straight lines rather than a triangle.

If you put the two sides together (angle of zero degrees between them) the two ends would be 3 cm apart. If you made the angle 180 degrees, the ends would be 31 cm apart. But neither of these would be triangles. The answers you need are anything between these two extremes.
