    x^2 - 4x - 2 = 0

    x

    = [4 ± √(16 + 8)/2

    Solutions:

    x = 2 - √6

    x = 2 + √6

    [x² - 4x + 4] - 4 - 2 = 0

    [ x - 2 ]² = 6

    x - 6 = ± √6

    x = 6 ± √6

    This does NOT factor.

    Use either 'Completing the Square' or 'Quadratic Eq'n'.

    Completing the Square

    x^2 - 4x = 2

    ( x - 2)^2 - 4 = 2

    ( x - 2)^2 = 6

    x - 2 = sqrt(6)

    x = 2 +/- sqrt(6)

    x^2-4x-2 = (x-2-sqrt(6))(x-2+sqrt(6))

    If you want to solve the given equation, complete the square.

    Us the quadratic formula. You know, the equation with ( -b +/- sqrt( b^2 - 4ac) ) / (2a)
