What are your thoughts on Unitarian Universalism?

I'm an atheist, but I'm joining my local UU congregation in February because I feel the work of people of all worldviews coming together to change humanity is important, and I feel like the church is a place we put differences aside to cultivate and focus on that.

I always say UU congregations are to churches what the Diogenes Club in the Sherlock Holmes stories were to gentlemen's clubs.

"...There are many men in London, who, some from shyness, some from misanthropy, have no wish for the company of their fellows. Yet they are not averse to comfortable chairs and the latest periodicals. It is for the convenience of these that the Diogenes Club was started, and it now contains the most unsociable and unclubable men in town. . ."

(The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter)

There are people who don't fit in regular churches; Atheists, Agnostics, Deists, Theists, Pagans, free-thinkers, Christians who married Jews, Buddhists who married Anglicans . . . Yet, they are not averse to exploring spiritual issues, working with a group for social justice or having potlucks with like-minded people. So, they join a UU congregation.

My opinion is not universal. Our web committee has voted down using that comparison on our site, 1:6, both times I've proposed it. They think the word "unchurchable" would offend members and visitors alike.

I don't really feel the need for that kind of community in my life, but they sound nice enough.

Seth Andrews did a podcast about them several months ago, if you're interested:

Nice idea. Not for me. Yes, your membership is a statement of respect and peace win those around you. That is good.

We change humanity by changing ourselves and expanding the range of choices of those with little choice at all.

Best wishes on the new year.

It is easy believeism that is the broad road to Hell, the lie that all paths lead to God. It is post modernism to its logical conclusion, that you can't know anything, so all beliefs are valid, which complete nonsense, because beliefs contradict one another.

I've never met a UU IRL, but one of my Y!A contacts is one. If she's anything to go by, they're good people.

the blind trying to lead the blind

they are smooth though so watch out

Mat 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
