In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna that acting with detachment means doing the right thing for its own sake, because it needs to be?

done, without worrying about success or failure.

What needs to be done?

Update:

Regarding philosophyangel's answer below, philosophically, What is one's duty?

I like where your answer is going: that one's purpose is to realize that the ordinary world and our idea of self is illusory.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna to courageously and responsibly act according to his appointed role as a warrior. He says "Do not give way to weakness. It is unbecoming of a warrior. Stand up, be a hero, and fight." This is simply a message to Hindu readers living in the 3rd century BC that it is important to do one's duty. It is also a literary launching pad for Krishna's sermons about the nature of the soul, mortality, God, and karma and about having perspective on the nature of one's ordinary life and spiritual life. It also conveys the idea of monism. Because Hindus view all of creation as a manifestation (not a creation) of God and believe that the purpose of life is to "realize" that God is real (lasting and is consciousness and existence itself) and the ordinary world and our idea of self is illusory (passing and changeable), Krishna tells Arjuna to act without attachment to things of the world that are passing.

you do realize of course that hinduism is based on babylonian myths and most of the people in hindus place of origins, i.e. the middle east, are now moslems?

btw, ive read the baghavat gita. and im sure you know that even khrisna told arjun to do shameful things just to win the war. in hinduism, winning trumps morality. im sure you know.

    SRI.KRISHNA DID "NOT" SAY SO.

PLEASE READ THE "ORIGINAL" --PLEASE DO NOT READ WRONG ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS.

"DO YOUR DUTY (KARMA) --ONE ALWAYS DOES ONE'S ACTIONS WITH CERTAIN ASSUMPTIONS--THINGS MAY NOT TURN AROUND AS ONE EXPECTS THEM TO --SO THE TYPE OF FRUITS ARE NOT IN ONE'S HANDS --WITH THAT FEELING ,ONE SHOULD NOT DETACH ONE SELF FROM PERFORMING ONE'S DUTY. "

THERE IS AN ADAGE --A FEW BATTLES MAY BE LOST--BUT EVENTUALLY THE WAR IS "WON" --THE FAILURES OF A BATTLE DO NOT DETER AN ARMY FROM FIGHTING --DETACH YOURSELF FROM THAT DEFEATIST MENTALITY --AND CONTINUE TO PERFORM THE DUTY ..

"NA KARMA PHALA HETHUR BHURMAA THAY SANGOSTVAKARMANI"
