how does the wildcard thing work in the nfl playoffs?

ok, so i have only just in the last couple of years developed an interest in football. I kind of like the philidelphia eagles. now this year they are so far tied for second in thier division. so they are probably not going to win their division. so how does the nfl decide which teams can be the wildcard teams for the playoffs ?

There are eight division winners, four in each conference. There are two wild cards from each conference that make the playoffs as well. These two teams have the best record across the conference they are in. The two best records are qualified for the wild card round. The two lowest seeded division winners play the two wild card teams. Best record against worst record.

The next best records of the non-division winners. Same as baseball or basketball or any other sport that allows non-division winners in the playoffs. The Eagles have no shot.

They take the top team from each division and then the two teams with the best records in each conference are wild cards. No, the eagles are out.
