The Ionian cities along the western Anatolian coast saw several types of government over the centuries they existed. For much of the time the cities were ruled independently under cycles of tyrants and democracies. Also for a considerable period they were part of Persian Empire, although even then tyrannies and democracies governed, but they were ultimately subordinate to the Persian King.
