The Germanic border tribes wiped out 5000 legionaires. The relationship went from uneasy passivity to outright war. Later, Marcus Aurelius crushed the invading Germans. However, the Romans were forced to rely more and more on tributary "barbarian" tribes for their military, and, eventually, some of those tributary allies ended the Western Roman Empire.
