How far away is Long Beach, California from Compton?
I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado and I'm planning on taking a trip to both Long Beach and Compton. I work for the Marriott hotel franchise, so I can usually get a pretty decent discount for a stay. I need; 1.) An approximation of distance between the two cities. 2.) An idea where any Marriott hotels might be located in both cities. 3.) How to navigate safely in both environments. 4.) Places of interest in both locations.

1. The section of North Long Beach touches Compton
2. We have to look it up just like you do. Off the top of my head:
Marriott - LB Airport
Residence Inn - LB Airport
Renaissance - LB Downtown
Courtyard - LB Downtown (FANTASTIC restaurant inside - James Republic)
Either a Courtyard or Residence Inn near the Queen Mary
3. The same way you do at home. don't flash money, don't walk down deserted streets, etc etc
= most of LB is pretty safe except for some "stupid" people. I wouldn't be concerned about walking around near the locations of the hotels mentioned.
4. Long Beach = lots of stuff to do, read a tourist guide, great people watching and vintage / indie shopping
Compton = unless there is something going on a the Stubhub Center (where the Galaxy play) or at Cal State Dominquez Hills = it's just a city.
Long Beach is on the border of LA / OC = you have easy access to all the events happening in those cities.
